Glasgow to London trains cancelled as railway blocked by flooding

Trains travelling between Glasgow and London have been severely disrupted as a result of flooding on the railway.

Network Rail posted photo of the the lines at Lockerbie submerged in water after a period if heavy rain. As a result Virgin Trains confirmed the lines are 'blocked', with services subject to delay, cancellation or diversion.

Network Rail Scotland Tweeted: "Following heavy overnight rain, we have flooding between #Carlisle & #Lockerbie with water from an adjacent field running onto tracks. Water level is about a foot above rails so West Coast Main line is currently closed. We will update."

Virgin Trains added: "Due to heavy rain flooding the railway between Lockerbie and Carlisle all lines are blocked. Trains running through these stations may be delayed, cancelled or diverted."

Hundreds of passengers have been thrown into chaos as a result with some hitting out at Virgin for their response in putting on a replacement bus service, and others concerned about missing their ongoing connection.

UPDATE 2.22pm: Network Rail say: "Good news. Water levels have dropped and we are now also able to open the north bound line to traffic - again with a 5mph speed limit in place for safety reason. It is still raining however and we will continue to monitor."
