Glasgow to Edinburgh canal towpath fully re-opens after massive storm caused collapse

The Union Canal, which runs between Glasgow and Edinburgh, has reopened to the public after a historic breach in the Falkirk area.

It's been closed since August 2020, after a massive storm caused a section of canal to collapse at Polmont.

However, it's not fully operational just yet and only accessible for locals to make use of its towpath.

Major repair and renovation project (Daily Record)

The area of canal restored was re-filled with water back in March.

Scottish Canals bosses say it'll remain closed for navigation until Friday May, 28.

Climate change resilience works along the Union Canal have also been carried out in a bid to stop a significant breach happening again.

Senior Project Manager at Scottish Canals, George McBurnie, told the Record: "It's been very challenging, especially with coronavirus and numerous restrictions and lockdowns in place across Scotland.

"The pandemic has had an impact on us working at the site, we had to relook at how we worked to keep everyone safe and ensure rules were met, but also ensure we were able to do this work as quickly as possible.

"We had to rescue over 11,000 fish from the breach location, which were also located in pools in the woods. That was a challenge in itself.

"There was also the challenge of funding and who would pay for the repairs, there was an ask of the Scottish Government, and we were very lucky and very please to secure £6.5m, not only to be able to do the work at the breach, but to look at the whole of the Union Canal and see what we could do to improve the rise of a historic breach like this happening again.

"If anyone is thinking about making the most of lockdown rules being eased from today, I'd ask then to have a look at Scottish Canals website first, not only to familiarise themselves with the restrictions, but also to read what work is still ongoing at the site."
