Glasgow to celebrate Chinese New Year with colourful ceremony in George Square

Just when you thought the party season was over, Glasgow’s official Chinese New Year Festival is set to bring a sea of colour and activity back to the city centre next month.

Lions and dragons will take over George Square on Sunday, February 2 for the free event - which will welcome in the Year Of the Rat.

Beginning at midday, a traditional lion dance and eye-dotting ceremony will open proceedings before attendees are treated to an afternoon of multicultural celebrations.

Mesmerising lion and dragon dances, martial arts displays, a live pipe band and Chinese dance performances will showcase a blend of Scottish and Chinese cultures at this unmissable family event.

Andy Chung, Chair of Chinese Cultural and Welfare Society Scotland, said: "Celebrations will be centred around wishes of goodwill, peace and prosperity with people from all backgrounds welcome to join us for our sixth annual Chinese New Year Festival at George Square.

We’re delighted to celebrate this joyful occasion in our home city of Glasgow and want to offer thanks to all of our supporters and sponsors for their contribution".

Set to be one of the most vibrant cultural events of the year, it’s an occasion that the whole family can enjoy together.

The main festival at George Square is open to all and limited tickets are also available for a traditional Chinese art show in the City Chambers.

A civic reception for invited guests will follow in the City Chambers and will include traditional music and dancing, as well as associated cultural activities for children.
