Glasgow thunderstorm yellow weather warning issued by Met Office amid highs of 28C

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for Glasgow which is set to span across a two day period.

The warning, which was issued today (August 12), is set to start this weekend.

Beginning on Sunday (August 14), weather forecasters have said that the city should experience a thunderstorm with the warning coming into force at 12pm and ending at 6am the following day.

The Met Office has said that whilst some areas of the UK will remain dry, "hit-and-miss thunderstorms" will develop Sunday and Sunday night, and "may bring disruption" in certain places.

In their weather warning they explain: "During Sunday afternoon, cloudier conditions and areas of rain are expected to develop across parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland. A few places seem likely to see heavy downpours and thunderstorms, which could bring up to around 50 mm of rain falling in 2-3 hours leading to some disruption. These may last through the night in places. Hail and frequent lightning are potential additional hazards."

The updated weather alert comes as the city is also set to see highs of nearly 30C. According to forecasters, on Saturday the city should experience highs of 27C followed by lows of 13C. During the day the chances of rain are set to remain low with just a 10 per cent chance.

Then on Sunday, when the weather warning kicks in, temperatures are set to stay much the same reaching highs of 28C and lows of 15C.

So what can we expect during the yellow weather warning?

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
