Glasgow thug stamped on stranger during terrifying city centre attack

A thug attacked a stranger on a busy city centre street and robbed him of his £4 hat.

James McNeilly pounced on Matthew Carr in Glasgow's Royal Exchange Square on January 10 this year.

The 38-year-old pushed Mr Carr causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head off the concrete.

McNeilly then stamped on the victim's body before making off with the hat which he later binned.

The yob pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting Mr Carr to his injury and robbing him of a hat.

The court heard McNeilly and Mr Carr initially chatted behind the city's Gallery of Modern Art at 8pm.

Prosecutor Carrie Stevens said: "In the course of the conversation, McNeilly grabbed hold of Mr Carr and pushed him to the ground.

"They were unknown to each other.

"He caused Mr Carr to his head off the ground.

"While Mr Carr was on the ground, McNeilly stamped on his body.

"He then grabbed the hat from Mr Carr's head and left in the direction of George Square."

Mr Carr followed McNeilly as the police were contacted.

The victim was found to have an injury to the right side of his face.

He was taken to hospital for examination and he was found to have sustained bruising and a lump to his head where his face hit the ground.

McNeilly was arrested meantime.

He told officers in reply to caution and charge: "If you look at the cameras, you will see it was two women that jumped on his head."

Garvey McArdle, defending, told the court that McNeilly has an unexpired sentence of 145 days.

The lawyer added: "The hat had a value of £4 and he put it in the bin.

"He doesn't know why he did this."

Sentence was deferred until next month for background reports by Sheriff Sean Murphy QC who continued McNeilly's remand in custody meantime.
