Glasgow Tesco worker dies after Covid-19 outbreak at Maryhill store

A Tesco worker has died after a Covid-19 outbreak at a Glasgow shop.

A man, believed to have been in his early 60s, became infected with the virus at the Maryhill Tesco Extra branch.

Others staff members have now also tested positive for coronavirus.

Tesco insisted a "very small number" of workers at the supermarket caught the virus but staff told Glasgow Live as many 35 people had tested positive since the start of the year.

A Tesco spokesperson told Glasgow Live: “A very small number of colleagues at our Glasgow Maryhill store have tested positive for Covid-19.

"Their close contacts have been informed. The safety of our colleagues, customers and suppliers remains our number one priority and we are working with local public health authorities, following all government guidance and taking the relevant precautions.

"We have extensive measures across all of our stores to help keep everyone safe, including protective screens at every checkout, social distancing signage and regular cleaning.”
