Glasgow tenement caves in sending huge sandstone blocks crashing onto ground

Police have been called to a tenement in the west end of Glasgow after huge blocks of sandstone fell off the building, leaving a gaping hole underneath three ground floor windows.

The incident happened earlier today at a tenement situated on the corner of Oakfield Avenue and Glasgow Street in the Hillhead area off Great Western Road.

As we reported last month, residents in the tenement were forced to evacuate with 'zero notice' after an inspection deemed the building unsafe to live in.

The evacuation came following an inspection by a structural engineer from Glasgow City Council’s Building Standards & Public Safety service, who noticed there was significant movement at the base of the front wall of the tenement.

The council had already closed off Oakfield Avenue to vehicles as a result of safety fears, and boarded up the entrance to two closes as well as fenced off the flat block.

Police were contacted by a local couple, who, on noticing that the cracks on the outside of the tenement had widened, were shocked to discover a number of sandstone blocks had fallen off less than an hour later on their return from the shops today.

They said: “When we returned less than an hour later, we were shocked to see that large blocks of sandstone had fallen from the building and were lying on the ground. We immediately called the police.”

Police Scotland confirmed to Glasgow Live that officers attended the scene earlier today to ensure suitable safety fencing is in place, and after doing so handed responsibility over to the council to deal with.

Glasgow City Council have been contacted for comment.
