Glasgow tailor shares step by step guide to making mask at home

A Glasgow tailor has shared his tips on how to stitch homemade masks following the Scottish Government advice that Scots should cover their faces while in the shop and on public transport.

Thomas Rae learned how to transform scraps of material into masks for those frontline workers.

The 56-year-old, who has worked as a tailor for 40 years, has made hundreds of masks since lockdown began - and now wants to help others learn how to make their own at home.

Thomas shared a video online explaining how the masks can be made - and hopes others will be inspired to sew their own and wear them while out and about to safeguard the health of others.

Although Thomas's masks won't prevent infection and are not the same as N95 respirators (tightly fitted devices that filter out 95 per cent of airborne particles) Nicola Sturgeon made clear that face coverings recommended in the Scottish Government guidance should be made of cloth.

The First Minister added: “The benefit comes from someone who might have the virus but isn’t aware of it because they’re not experiencing symptoms and are therefore not isolating completely - wearing a face covering reduces the chance of that person transmitting the virus onto others.”

Information published last week includes an official recommendation for limited use of face coverings in the ongoing fight against coronavirus - although the message remains that they should only be used on the rare occasion when staying at home isn’t an option.
