Glasgow support worker took medication from vulnerable person at their home

A Glasgow support worker has been reprimanded for entering a vulnerable person's home while off shift and taking medication from them.

Iain Adamson was working as a home support worker for North Lanarkshire Council when he was found to have acted unprofessionally and put the person at risk of harm.

He was called before the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) after the allegations came to light and his fitness to practise was deemed to be impaired.

It was found that on or around August 4, 2020, he acquired a key safe number from a colleague to gain access to a service users' home despite not being on shift that day.

He then went to the person's house and took prescription medication from them without telling his manager of his plans.

It was found that his actions 'were a breach of professional boundaries and demonstrated a disregard for safeguards put in place to keep AA and social service workers safe'.

A report on the matter added that "social service workers are expected to act with integrity and should not behave in a way which would bring their suitability to work in social services into question.

Adamson's choice to accept the unknown prescription medication 'calls into question his professional judgement and breaches the trust and confidence placed in him'.

Despite being employed in the care sector since 2009, he breached professional boundaries created 'to protect the most vulnerable individuals from exploitation, harm or manipulation'.

An investigation concluded that a warning will be placed on his registration in the sector for 12 months. It added that Adamson had accepted wrongdoing and demonstrated regret over his actions.
