Glasgow support worker took £250 and medication from addict service user

A Glasgow support worker has been reprimanded for taking medication and money off a service user.

Shauntanna Dolan was employed as a home support worker in the city when she was found to have acted inappropriately.

In July 2019, she accessed the bank account of a service user who is living with various medical conditions and a history of substance abuse and withdrew £250.

The money was allegedly a loan but left the vulnerable woman without money for so long that she had to raise it with Dolan's employer to get it back.

On the same day the money was taken, the support worker also took medication that wasn't prescribed to the woman and later disposed of it in a public bin.

The shocking behaviour was reported by the Scottish Social Services Council during a fitness to practise review.

Their report details: "Dolan took medication from a service user who has a history of substance misuse. That medication was not prescribed to that service user.

"She later disposed of that medication in a public bin. On the same day as she received medication from the service user, she obtained a loan of £250 from that same service user."

It adds that Dolan's behaviour "may have caused that service user to feel that all social service workers act in this way and create an unrealistic expectation on the part of that service user, which may affect how they interact with other workers in future."

Dolan hasn't worked in social services since 2019 and had one year of good practice prior to the incidents occurring.

For that reason the panel decided to place a warning on her registration for 18 months.
