Glasgow Subway to close at 9pm each night to help stop spread of coronavirus

Transport bosses have taken the decision to close the Subway in Glasgow from 9pm each night to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

The underground system is still running a daily eight-minute service but will stop at 9pm Monday to Saturday after the last train leaves the St Enoch station in the city centre.

Glasgow Subway normally operates from 6.30am until 11.40pm, but these hours have now been reduced.

The decision comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon ordered a lockdown of the country in an attempt to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.

In Scotland, 16 people have passed away after testing positive for covid-19 while the UK total stands at 422.

Despite the lockdown images were circulating online of people cramming onto underground trains in London and ScotRail carriages in Scotland.

SPT, the firm who run Glasgow Subway, has now taken the decision to reduce the number of services.

Bosses said they will continually review services, and reminded passengers only essential travel is necessary.

In a statement Glasgow Subway said: "The Subway is running and will continue to do so until 9pm each evening Monday to Saturday until further notice.

"We are currently running an eight-minute service all day

"We will be continually reviewing services & will update when any changes.

"Please only travel if you are an essential key worker and your journey is absolutely necessary."
