Glasgow student union to march this week to demand action to make streets safer

A Glasgow university's student union is set to march this week to show solidarity with victims of rape and sexual assault and demand action to make the city's streets safer.

Strath union, the University of Strathclyde's student union, will host their annual 'Fight for the Night' march this Thursday, December 8. This year they are working with Glasgow and Clyde Rape Crisis and Saheliya, amongst other partners, who all carry out vital work to raise awareness and support survivors of gender-based violence across Glasgow and Scotland.

The march is open for anyone who wants to show their support for the campaign's message to attend and will begin at Kelvingrove Park, with attendees being asked to meet on the Prince of Wales Bridge at 6 pm.

The march will then follow an approved route through the centre of Glasgow, ending in George Square, where a short rally will be held. There are five stops on the route where the procession will stop for a short break throughout the march.

Eva Curran, Women’s Representative at Strath Union, said: “Fight for the Night is always an amazing end to the 16 Days of Action. It’s about community and coming together to make change happen.

"I’m delighted to have so many universities joining us this year and look forward to marching alongside everyone”.

Following the march, attendees are welcome to join the event hosted in Strath Union for tea and coffee as well as a quiet place to relax and reflect after the march. If attendees plan to come to the event after the march, a form of valid photographic ID will be needed to enter the Union building.

Full event details can be found here.
