Glasgow street DJ Col Solo goes big in Japan

One of Glasgow's most well-recognised street DJs has made it big in Japan, after featuring on a major news channel in the Far East country.

Legendary Glaswegian, Col Solo, who can often be spotted blaring out the tunes on city centre streets, had his talents broadcast to an international audience on the NHK network after a chance meeting with a Japanese film crew in Glasgow Central Station.

Speaking to Glasgow Live, Col explained the quirk of fate which has led to his iconic street raves being opened up to a brand new audience.

He said: "When I broke my phone on the weekend of Storm Ciara while trying to busk in the rain and 50mph gusts outside SWG3, I could only stay in contact with people by going to Central Station several times a day to use the WiFi there.

"I noticed that a Japanese film crew were repeatedly hiding then surprising and interviewing people who played the public piano in Central Station. The Japanese equivalent of BBC1, TV channel NHK, were making a show all about the stories of members of the public who play that piano.

"Their sign requested 'show us the melody of your heart' so I decided to bring my LED lights to show a different side of Glasgow.

"The next day, I took my trolley to Central Station and put a big LED mask over my face.

"I started playing and the film crew said they had never seen anything like it before!".

"It was aired in Japan this week and was well received. Japan got to see some of what we Glaswegians can do."

Lockdown has meanwhile given enough time for Col to complete his first finished song in five years.

He used a dance mat games controller to trigger the vocal edits and says he can’t wait for people to hear the track called 'Genie in a Dance Mat' in the coming weeks.

It is currently being mastered by Glasgow-based recording artist Rognvald, who designed a music machine for Casio and produced for Robbie Williams at the former Take That star's LA mansion.
