Glasgow stabbing: Suspect shot dead by armed police during West George Street major incident

A suspect has been shot and killed during a major police incident in Glasgow.

The man was killed by armed officers after chaos broke out in the city centre this afternoon.

Police also confirmed an officer was stabbed while on the scene and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Johnson said the incident is ongoing and the public should avoid the area, however there is no wider risk to locals.

He added:"Armed police officers attended the incident and I can confirm that a male suspect was shot by an armed officer.

"I would like to reassure the public that at this time we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident.

"I can also confirm that a police officer was injured while dealing with the incident and that officer is receiving treatment in hospital."

Paramedics were also called to the scene in Glasgow (@Milroy1717)

Officers from Police Scotland and members of the Scottish Ambulance Service were spotted on West George Street in the city centre just before 1.30pm.

Around 20 cop cars and multiple ambulances were seen on the busy street close to the Park Inn Hotel in the city.

Scottish Police Federation said: "We are aware of reports a police officer has been stabbed in an incident in Glasgow city centre.

"Our officials are in attendance to provide all necessary support.

"Please allow our colleagues the space to do their jobs.

"Further updates will be provided when we are able to do so."
