Glasgow soup kitchen hero lands Woman of the Year award from Lorraine Kelly

A selfless Glaswegian has landed herself a a top prize at the Woman of the Year awards, presented to her by TV celeb Lorraine Kelly.

Last week, we reported on the moment a stalwart of Glasgow's community was reduced to tears by Lorraine when she found out she was up for Woman of the Year 2021.

Then, a surprise visit from the Lorraine team was led by bagpipes and as she received the knock on her door she burst into tears.

Laura McSorley was nominated for her work with the Kindness Homeless Street Team and made it into the final three, as reported by the Daily Record.

And, on Monday night, scooped the Woman Of The Year Kindness Award at a ceremony in London. A delighted Laura was pictured celebrating the incredibly well-deserved prize with Lorraine shortly after.

Laura set up the Glasgow Kindness Homeless Street Team to provide hot meals and essential items to homeless and vulnerable people and is regularly seen at the soup kitchen, which operates three nights a week in George Square.

Starting the charity with just £5 at the end of 2020, Laura has now dished out tens of thousands of hot meals to those in need, feeding those living on the streets four days a week.

Upon being told of her nomination, Lorraine told Laura: "Wonderful. What an amazing, amazing woman. All of our finalists are incredible. I'm glad I don't have to vote cause three finalists are just so good."

Laura admitted: "I'm a bit overwhelmed."

Her friends then spoke on video saying she makes a huge difference to people of Glasgow, and that there was a need for the Kindness Homeless Street Team.

One added: "Laura is an absolute gem has heart of gold."

Laura told Lorraine: "I think I'm crazy to be honest. These guys are amazing, We do it together."

The amazing woman has previously been sent a letter from Boris Johnson praising her for providing a 'much-needed sense of comfort' and honouring her with a special Point of Light award.

Congratulations to Laura from all of us here at Glasgow Live!
