Glasgow sinkhole opens up near George Square prompting closure of busy road

A city centre road has been closed after a sinkhole emerged earlier this morning.

North Fredrick Street, near George Square, has been closed to traffic by emergency services.

Pictures from the scene show a sinkhole that has appeared in the middle of the road with the surrounding pavement also buckling.

Police officers have cordoned off the road with motorists advised to avoid the area.

Traffic Control and Management has said: "North Frederick Street is currently closed at its junction with George Square due to a significant road defect.

"Road users should consider alternate routes."

North Fredrick Street is a busy junction for access to both George Square and Queen Street Station.
