Glasgow Science Centre melting roof fears as black 'goo' spotted amid soaring temperatures

This weather has us all feeling like we're literally melting, but do you remember when it was so hot in Glasgow that the Science Centre actually did melt?

Back in 2018, temperatures in the city hit 31.9C which beat the record as Scotland's hottest day in 23 years.

The heat was too much for the Glasgow Science Centre's (GSC) roof which melted and dripped black "goo" down the building.

Now one beady-eyed Glaswegian has raised concerns that it could be happening again.

A passerby shared a picture of the infamous black "goo" dripping on the building as workmen carry out repairs on the roof.

They said: "It looks like the new panels on the side of the Glasgow Science Centre have overheated and the adhesive leaked out again. Wonder if they will get it all finished in time for COP26."

Well, our readers will be glad to hear that the building isn't melting but is actually getting a makeover to better prepare it for absolutely roasting weather like we're experiencing right now.

A more heat-resistant waterproof membrane is being installed to make it more robust in dealing with the ever-changing Glasgow climate.

As part of the £5.5 million upgrades, the GSC roof, windows, and building management system will be improved.

Dr Stephen Breslin, chief executive of Glasgow Science Centre said: “Glasgow Science Centre is an iconic landmark for the city. The new roof design and the planned improvements to the windows and building management system will make the building more energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable for years to come.

"In the lead up to Glasgow hosting COP26, we want to lead by example in tackling climate change and are working towards achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030.”

Any chance we could get some of this heat-resistant membrane for ourselves? Sweating here.
