Glasgow schools to reopen in August

Schools in Glasgow have been given a return date following the Scottish Government's announcement of lockdown easing measures.

Nicola Sturgeon revealed this afternoon (Thursday) lockdown easing measures will be implemented at the end of next week.

The Scottish Government has published a route map on how the country will move out of lockdown and into a phased lifting of restrictions - what Sturgeon calls “our journey to a new normal”.

Speaking at Holyrood, Sturgeon confirmed lockdown will be eased on Thursday, May 28, if the R number (the rate of infection) continues to stay below 1 in Scotland.

And as part of the First Minister's announcement, she confirmed - all being well - schools across the country will reopen on August 11.

As detailed in the Scottish Government's 'through and out of the crisis' document: "We are planning for children to return to school under a blended model of part-time in-school teaching and part-time in-home learning.

"Public health measures including physical distancing will be in place. Subject to the evidence and progress of the epidemic we expect schools to open on August 11."

However, school staff could return to work as early as next month.

The document adds: "We aim to restart school education for almost all children and young people in Scotland in August.

"Subject to public health guidance, teachers and other school staff should be returning to schools in June, to plan and prepare for the new model of learning that will be implemented in August.

"This new model, will include physical distancing and significantly reduced class sizes as well as enhanced hygiene regimes. As a result most pupils will spend around half their time in school and half learning at home.

"Health and safety guidance, including risk assessments, will be in place prior to staff returning to school in June."
