Glasgow schools closed due to burst water main

Two schools are closed today as areas in the east of Glasgow woke up to a low water supply this morning.

Bannerman High and St Bridget's Primary School have been shut for the day due to the burst water main, affecting around 16,000 homes in Coatbridge , Baillieston, Blairhill, Bargeddie and Kirkwood.

A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said Garrowhill Primary School, Swinton Primary School, St Francis of Assisi Primary School and Caledonia Primary School have reserve water but that they are currently "monitoring the situation" to determine whether they will also close.

Scottish Water engineers found the burst on a 12 inch water main at a car park near Espieside Crescent, leaving residents in the area with no water, low pressure or discoloured water from their taps.

Normal water supplies are now being restored to homes across Coatbridge and surrounding areas.

But Scottish Water chiefs warn it will take longer for some homes to have their normal supplies restored, due to complexities with the repair of the burst.

To help minimise the issue, they have created two distribution points for bottled water. Residents can access bottles at Showcase Cinema at Barbridge Leisure Centre G69 7TZ and at a branch of Morrisons supermarket in Main Street, Bailieston G69 9AH.

They also said that they had two incident caravans on-site in the affected areas where teams of staff will be based to help customers and provide information.

A spokesman for Scottish Water said: "Scottish Water has a team on-site to restore normal supplies as quickly as possible.

"We apologise for the inconvenience the loss of supply will cause to affected customers and will work as quickly and efficiently as possible to restore normal supplies as soon as we can.

"We thank affected customers for their patience and understanding."
