Glasgow School of Art fire remembered one year on from devastating blaze

On June 15 at 11.20pm, Glasgow School of Art Mackintosh building went up in flames.

It was the second blaze to hit the iconic building after the first devastating fire four years earlier in 2014.

Flames ripped through the historic property, designed by architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh, one year ago today.

At its height 120 firefighters were involved in the operation to bring the fire under control, with around 50 still on site working days later.

There was an outpouring of shock and dismay from across the country, including Scotland's First Minister, former students and other public figures.

Glasgow School of Art was built in the late 1890s by Mackintosh, then a junior draughtsman, and is widely considered to be his masterpiece.

Experts have estimated that the cost of rebuilding the gutted building would be at least £100 million, and people from across the globe have pledged to help rebuild.

Just walls and structural beams remain in the main foyer of the building, but despite the damage, Glasgow School of Art board chairwoman Muriel Gray has insisted the building will return.

We take a look back at the fire in our gallery below.
