Glasgow School of Art fire investigation still ongoing almost two years after devastating blaze

There remains 'no definitive timescale' for completing the investigation into the Glasgow School of Art fire almost two years after the incident took place.

The blaze broke out on June 15, 2018 as the building was nearing the end of a £35m restoration, following a previous fire in May of 2014.

A year later, in June last year, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said the investigation was 'entering its final phases'.

But SFRS has told Glasgow Live that "no definitive timescale" can be provided for the investigation to be concluded.

Assistant Chief Officer Stuart Stevens, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s Director of Service Delivery, said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service investigation into the 2018 fire at the Glasgow School of Art remains ongoing.

“On site excavations and examinations have been temporarily suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic, however the wider investigation is continuing.

“As Covid-19 restrictions ease, it is anticipated that on site investigative work at the GSA site may recommence subject to Scottish Government guidance and social distancing rules.

“In the current circumstances it is not possible to provide definitive timescales for investigative work commencing at the site or for the investigation being concluded, and we would like to thank everyone for their understanding as we continue with this complex and challenging fire investigation."

The School of Art said it is committed to rebuilding the Mackintosh Building once the investigation work has been completed into the cause of the blaze - which spread to the neighbouring O2 ABC concert venue on Sauchiehall Street.

Last month, Historic Scotland removed their objection to the demolition of the ABC, an historic former cinema, after a report stated the building is in danger of collapsing and has been overrun by vermin and raw sewage.
