Glasgow's The Roll Shop in Polmadie nominated for Best Takeaway prize at Food Scotland Awards

An independently run fast food restaurant and sandwich shop in Glasgow's Polmadie area is in the running for a top award.

Food Awards Scotland last week revealed their finalists for the 2022 awards, with winners to be crowned at a glitzy prize ceremony next month. The awards 'celebrate the best in the food industry; from the excellent restaurants, chefs and servers, to the specialists and suppliers'.

There are several Glasgow nominees across the various categories - as we've reported on over the past few days - however only three Glasgow establishments have made the shortlist for the prestigious Takeaway of the Year title. And the popular The Roll Shop, based on Polmadie Road, is one one of them.

Perhaps not known to many given its location across from the Polmadie Recycling Centre, The Roll Shop specialises in all-day breakfasts and fresh homemade meals, ice cream and desserts, available for both takeaway and collection. The eatery earns rave reviews on account of its fantastic Scottish breakfasts and soups.

One punter recently wrote online: "Came to The Roll Shop for breakfast, first time being here. Had the full breakfast which was lovely, so full up after it.

"The place was so comfortable, decor spot on, staff were lovely. So accommodating.

"Looking forward to my next visit. Thank you."

Also on the top takeaway list is the legendary Paesano Pizza, which many would argue serves the best pizza in the whole of the city. Much-loved by locals and out-of-towners, they have a restaurant on Great Western Road and on Miller Street in the city centre, as well as a sister pasta restaurant on Mitchell Street.

And completing the trio of Glasgow nominees in this particularly category is Lamora Pizza, another city centre pizza spot based on Sauchiehall Street. It's well known for its fresh stonebaked pizza and focaccia, as well as its homemade cakes and desserts.

It gets a lot of love from reviews too.

One recent visitor from down south wrote online: "I've lived in England for months, but I've never seen such a delicious and cheap pizza place".

Awards organisers promise 'a memorable event'.

A statement read: "Whether it is the places that you have had your lunch and dinner hundreds of times or new establishments that have just entered the industry, the Food Awards Scotland 2022 are an exclusive celebration of the masters that enhance the flavours in Scotland. The event will welcome top professionals of the country’s food sector that provide delicious dishes, the freshest of products and rich menus.

"It will also showcase food suppliers, servers and manufacturers that take our taste buds around the world while in the comfort of Scotland. The awards promise to be a memorable event in the food industry’s calendar, with a wide range of accolades ready to be presented to the most deserving professionals and establishments, including Restaurant of the Year, Best Italian Establishment, Bakery of the Year, Best World Cuisine and many more."

A spokesperson for The Food Awards Scotland said: “Scotland offers a wide range of places that serve world cuisines. The finalists were voted for by the public for providing authentic recipes and unique dishes to their diners, creating memorable experiences for both residents and visitors.

“Undoubtedly, there are some amazing specialists around the country, who know how to offer great service, delicious food and meet the expectations of their diners. These are the professionals that we aim to reward at The Food Awards Scotland 2022.

“We would like to wish all the finalists the best of luck and we can’t wait to welcome all our guests and celebrate the winners with them.”

Congratulations to both our Glasgow nominees, who deservedly find their names on the list. For more about the awards and to see the full list of finalists, you can click here.
