Glasgow's The Forge Market celebrates 25 years at heart of east end community

The Forge Market is blowing out the candles as it celebrates 25 years at the heart of the east end community this week.

Scotland's largest indoor market opened its doors to the public back in 1995, and since then has remained an integral part of everyday life in the local area - as well as continually support local schools through competitions and local charitable organisations through free lets.

To mark the occasion, Glasgow's Lord Provost Phillip Braat will unveil a plaque in the building at 11.00am this morning, while tomorrow, The East Kilbride Pipe Band will be playing between 12.00pm and 1.00pm at the front concourse to passing shoppers.

The Lord Provost said: “This is a milestone anniversary for The Forge and everyone who works and shops here.

"During these extraordinary times, it is good to have something positive to celebrate, and therefore it is a pleasure to be part of these celebrations for an institution that has been an integral part of the local community over the last 25 years."

There will also be free balloons for the little ones and shoppers will also be able to take advantage of discounts by traders in the market on selected items as part of the birthday celebrations.

The indoor market on Duke Street is open from Thursday to Sunday with 180 varied stalls, plus fast food and a kids' play area.
