Glasgow's SSE Hydro named world's second busiest arena venue

Barely a night goes by without Glasgow's much loved SSE Hydro being packed to the rafters with folk out watching their favourite band or artist take to the stage.

And, such is the popularity of the 13,000 capacity arena, a new global poll has seen it rocket into second place in the list of the world's busiest concert venues in 2019.

The feat was recognised by Pollstar, the trade publication for the concert industry, in their end of year list highlighting the Top 200 arena venues according to Worldwide Ticket Sales.

With 1,055,970 tickets sold and $72,245,989 in gross ticket sales between November 22, 2018 and 20 November, 2019, the Hydro comes in at second place behind New York's Madison Square Garden.

And Glasgow's premier venue has some clear daylight between the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, having sold 25,000 more tickets over the year and achieving more than $11,000,000 in gross ticket sales.

To put the Hydro's position and popularity as a concert venue in to perspective, the arena sold more than 300,000 more tickets than The 02 in London and racking up over $14,000,000 more in gross ticket sales.

Meanwhile in respect of the world's busiest club venues for 2019, Glasgow's O2 Academy finds itself at number 14 on the list, with SWG3 in 68th place, King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in 70th place and St Lukes in 141st place.
