Glasgow's Reidvale Centre to close with 'heartfelt regret' after failing to secure funding

A centre which has been at the heart of an east-end community for decades has announced it will have to close with "heartfelt and deepest regret" after a recent drop in funding.

The Reidvale Neighbourhood Centre, previously known as the South Dennistoun Neighbourhood Centre, was formed in the late 70s by a number of local groups who took over an empty Victorian building in the area to provide "appropriate accommodation and activities" for local people.

However, they'll now be forced to close after failing to secure the funding they need to keep running the centre.

Posting on Facebook, the centre team wrote: "It is with heartfelt and deepest regret that we have to inform you that the Neighbour Centre are having to close due to a recent drop in funding."

They then confirmed the date of the closure will be from March 31 before adding that the hope to reopen at some point in the future.

They stated: "Our closure is hopefully for a short period of time and our charity will be dormant until future funding is found."

When Glasgow Live, contacted the centre, the secretary of the group Linda Scott said that residents are hugely upset about the loss and confirmed that they will be putting in applications for funding into as many places as they can. She said: "We are hopeful that we will get the funding, but the problem with these things is that they take so long to turn around and it could be some time before we are able to sort something. That's why we've been forced to close the centre in the meantime as we can't afford to keep incurring costs."

She asked people to keep following their journey and supporting them and that hopefully, they would reopen as soon as they can.

The centre is run by a charity and provides activities and classes for children, youths and adults alike, and tries to cater for every aspect of resident's lives, including socialising, hobbies, exercise and wellbeing, training and employment, as well as activities and events for the whole family to enjoy.

Devastated residents took to the post to support the team and vent their frustrations at the lack of funding available.

One wrote: "Unbelievable these community facilities are being allowed to close due to the lack of investment and funding support they are an integral part of the community from tots to pensioners serving all groups so so sad this is happening."

While another added: "So genuinely sorry to hear this. Great community centre. Will sorely be missed by a lot of people in the community. Loved popping in there from time to time to their cafe. Food is good and well-priced. All lovely people who volunteer in there."
