Glasgow's Queen Street station evacuated as smoke pours from train

Glasgow's Queen Street train station has been evacuated after smoke belched from a train.

Rush hour passengers have been ordered out of the city centre station while emergency services deal with the incident this morning.

Pictures from the scene show thick black smoke coming from a stricken train on the platform.

Eyewitnesses took to Twitter as the incident unfolded.

Dr Fiona Skillen tweeted: "Fire on a train on Queen Street station means I’m stuck on a train in the tunnel. The smell of smoke is acrid."

A few minutes later she added: "The train which was on fire has been evacuated passed us in the tunnel so our train is now filled with chemically smelling smoke."

Passenger Don Kelly pointed out: "Stuck on a train in a tunnel at Glasgow Queen street station.

"It has been evacuated due to a fire alarm and smoke coming from another train. Obviously waiting for safety reasons. Yet someone is still loudly complaining that they will miss their train. People are a******* sometimes."

Long queues are reported to be forming outside the station.

Student Holly Rumble posted: "There’s a train on fire at Glasgow Queen Street. Will I make it to Dundee to present my dissertation? It’s all to play for."

Holidaymaker Mary Twaddle Smith added: "After a nightmare journey home yesterday the trains are currently suspended due to a fire alarm at Queen Street. Welcome back from holiday! I'm attempting to channel calming thoughts."

Scotrail warned passengers of station closure, tweeting : "The fire alarm is sounding at Queen Street, we're unable to operate trains to/from the station, more updates to follow."

The station reopened to passengers shortly before 9am, with Scotrail explaining the smoke came from a "broken down train".

They warned that some services may still experience disruptions, saying: "We are sorry to customers for the delay to their journey and will do everything we can to get services moving as quickly as possible."
