Glasgow's Old Salty's wins national fish and chip restaurant of the year award

One of Glasgow's most popular fish and chip restaurants is celebrating success after scooping a national fish and chip restaurant of the year award.

Byres Road's Old Salty's has been crowned the Prestige Scotland's Gastro Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year winners for 2021, with judges praising the west end spot for the quality of the food, personal touch, passion of service and community feel.

Speaking to Glasgow Live following the news, Old Salty's Jackie Mullen shared her pride at the award.

She said: "We have loved being able to open our doors again and without doubt the best part has been being able to serve the community that we are so proud to be a part of but recently we were informed that there was also a little cherry on top!

"I truly think that it's no less than our talented and dedicated team deserve!

"We are a community minded, independent, family run business that’s been operating as Old Salty’s on Byres Road since 2014.

"We are the same owner and manager team who were responsible for the “old” and original Nick’s Italian Grill on Hyndland Road so we have a huge amount of experience between us and after all these years, our passion for delivering outstanding food and service is truly stronger than ever!

"Our vision for Old Salty’s from the start was to create a place where we could give fish and chip lovers a next level experience from the traditional 'chippy' so we decided we could improve it massively and add a few twists and turns of our own.

"To do this we knew no corners could be cut so we have always sourced the finest Scottish seafood and meat from our immediately local and independent suppliers. Everything is always cooked fresh to order and crucially, we ensure that the service is always as good as the food!"

And the west end restaurant has undergone a series of exciting changes over the last few months, making adjustments to its offering during lockdown.

The team have launched a new Italian restaurant in the upstairs area while the space itself has had a mini refurb. Furthermore, to accommodate coronavirus restrictions, Old Salty's has a brand new beer garden where Glaswegians can enjoy the like of pints and cocktails on Byres Road.

Jackie added: "The pandemic created some real challenges for us so we felt it was time for us to evolve and see whether we could help to put a smile back on peoples faces.

"We have a beautiful dining area upstairs at Old Salty’s and we managed to recruit some brilliant and exciting young chefs who have created an a la carte menu along with an ever changing specials menu that we are incredibly proud of and people have been absolutely loving – especially our now famous fresh lobster supper, monkfish, scallops and steaks. This of course is along with all the authentic, Italian classics we offer upstairs too.

"We also revamped our drinks menu and we now offer an extensive cocktail list - mixed by some of the best in the business, along with specially selected spirits, wines and now even draft Birra Moretti.

"To give people somewhere to enjoy all of this, we’ve refurbed our outside area as well as creating an awesome little beer garden right in the heart of Byres Road and we love it!"

Congratulations to Old Salty's on an award well deserved!
