Glasgow's most dangerous roads for cyclists named as accident hotspots highlighted

With more and more people opting to ditch the car and travel by bike instead, there have never been more cyclists on the roads.

And Glasgow's road networks have been altered to meet the demand including through the Spaces For People and Avenues projects and with plans to make part of the city centre car-free.

However, traveling by wheels still comes with its dangers and two Glasgow roads have been revealed as the most dangerous areas of the city for cyclists.

Data from the Department for Transport to Boyes Turner showed that there were nearly 500 reported accidents including cyclists in Glasgow alone within the last five years.

The A77 near Calder Street is the most common location of fatal cycling accidents in the city, with one cyclist being killed here in the last five years.

The B808 is the most common location of serious accidents for cyclists in the city, with 96 serious accidents occurring on this road since 2016.

Even considering the reduced number of motorists and cyclists on roads during periods of 2020 (due to the national lockdowns), there were more cycling deaths and serious injuries last year, than in 2019.

Cycling casualties are also making up a much larger percentage of overall RTA casualties than they did 10 years ago. In 2010, the number of RTA casualties involving cyclists represented 8% of the total number, however, this grew to 14% in 2020.
