Glasgow’s Kelvin Way reimagined as stretch of west end road reopens to traffic

A stretch of Kelvin Way will soon reopen to traffic - but it will look very different under the city’s Spaces for People programme.

As reported on Glasgow Live, the road through Kelvingrove Park was closed to vehicles back in May, to support social distancing and allow pedestrians more space.

With Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum now open, a stretch of the west end road will be open to cars accessing the rear car park.

However, a pop up cycle lane and row of planters will keep cars down to one lane - allowing those who exercise in the west end park more space to move, as shown in the video above.

Exit via the museum car park will take a separate route and the rest of Kelvin Way - between the museum entrance and University Avenue - will remain exclusively for walkers and cyclists.

Work begins today and the changes are expected to be in place by Tuesday, September 29.

The Spaces for People scheme has been rolled out across the city, from George Square to the Broomielaw and other areas with high footfall - hoping to encourage Glaswegians to walk or cycle without having to worry about room for social distancing.
