Glasgow's Kelvin Way closed to all traffic including pedestrians and cyclists during COP26

Glasgow City Council have confirmed that Kelvin Way will be closed to all traffic - including walkers, wheelers and cyclists - as part of preparations to host the COP26 climate summit.

The road, which cuts through Kelvingrove Park from University Avenue to Sauchiehall Street, has been part-closed to vehicle traffic since last year to provide extra space for active travel and exercise during COVID-19 as part of the 'Spaces for People' programme.

However, it will be fully closed off to pedestrians and all traffic from Friday October 29 to Tuesday November 2 and then again from Friday November 5 to Saturday November 6.

Pedestrian access to Kelvingrove Park will still be possible through the Gray Street entrance during the first closure (29 Oct- Nov 2).

A statement confirming news of the closure on the council website reads: "Whilst COP26 runs between 31 October and 12 November, there is a requirement to close Kelvin Way ahead of the conference to make the required preparations.

"Both the significance of the event in agreeing action to safeguard the future of the planet and the profile of the attendees - including world leaders and heads of state, means that inevitably there will be a significant security operation resulting in road closures and restrictions on some routes across the city."

Work will start today (October 25) to prepare the road for the temporary closures, and will include the short-term removal of street furniture and decorative planters along the thoroughfare.

The council say all these features will be reinstated from November 8 onwards.
