Glasgow's iconic Alhambra Theatre 'brought back to life' half a century after it closed

Glasgow's iconic lost Alhambra Theatre has been 'brought back to life' after half a century - through a build-it-yourself model.

Designer Stuart Smith-Gordon, from award-winning Ice Cream at the Interval, has released five Glasgow theatre model kits to put a little theatre into people's lives, including the King's, Theatre Royal, Citizens and the Pavilion.

And joining them is a model kit that helps you create a stunning miniature version of the late Alhambra Theatre on Wellington Street/Waterloo Street, which was the last traditional theatre built in Glasgow back in 1910.

After closing its doors in 1969 it was demolished two years later despite much local opposition.

Smith-Gordon spent hours studying and illustrating the theatre in great detail, picking up its most iconic features and help transport people into what was a beautiful theatre space thanks to the model.

He said: "I loved making toy theatres as a child and I thought I could use my skills to create model versions of my favourite theatres for fun.

"I decided to recreate the Alhambra as my Nanny has always shared amazing stories with me of her time there, as a place to escape and see some incredible dance and see some iconic stage performers. She was the first person to see the finished product and was delighted with it as it brought back great memories.

"There are lots of lovely prints of the exteriors of theatres but none really captures the incredible interiors of the auditoriums.”

A graduate of The Glasgow School of Art, Smith-Gordon began creating model kits as a way of reconnecting with theatres during lockdown.

Since then, he has created 35 model theatres and illustrated items - the largest ever created for existing theatres by a single artist.

Model kits are available for £15 (including a £1 donation to theatre charities) from Ice Cream At The Interval’s Etsy page.
