Glasgow's Duke of Wellington statue is wearing pink - this is why

The Duke of Wellington statue in Glasgow has been given a World Cup makeover to support the women's national team .

The iconic statue in Royal Exchange Square, complete with its usual cone, has been spotted donning the pink Scotland World Cup top, a blonde wig and holding a saltire ahead of the historic campaign.

Shelley Kerr's side have arrived in France preparing to compete with sides from across the globe as they go for glory.

Glasgow Live reader Bethan passed by the great Duke earlier today, taking to social media to post the snap with the caption: "Wellington’s dressed up in his Scotland shirt ready for the women’s world cup #WomensWorldCup"

Scotland kick off their World Cup campaign with a crunch clash against the Auld Enemy in Nice on Sunday.

Our team will also be aiming to beat fellow Group D hopefuls Japan and Argentina to progress to the next phase of the competition.

And it seems like Glasgow is right beside the squad in their bid to reach all the way to the final in the French capital on July 7.

Scotland Women's World Cup fixtures:

England vs Scotland – Sunday 9 June, 5pm

Japan vs Scotland – Friday 14 June, 2pm

Scotland vs Argentina – Wednesday 19 June, 8pm
