Glasgow's Calder Street closed after 'collision' sparks major emergency response

A major emergency response is in place in the Govanhill area after a 'road traffic collision'.

Calder Street, Allison Street, and Cathcart Road have been closed to traffic following the serious incident which unfolded around 6pm on Tuesday.

Members of the public have been urged to avoid the area.

An eyewitness told Glasgow Live that at least 20 police officers are on the scene as well as eight police cars, six police motorcycles, three ambulances, an incident response unit, and at least one fire engine.

He described it as "the biggest emergency response" he has ever seen in the city.

A police cordon has been put in place covering part of the pavement beside the road.

Police Scotland confirmed they are currently attending a crash.

A spokesperson added: "Road closures are in place following a road traffic collision around 6pm in the Calder Street area of Glasgow.

"Roads currently closed are Calder Street, Allison Street and Cathcart Road. Officers are in attendance and members of the public are advised to avoid the area.”

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said: "Calder Street closed to all traffic between Hollybrook Street and Aikenhead Road due to a serious road traffic accident.

"Police and emergency services in attendance. Road users should avoid the area and use alternative routes if possible."
