Glasgow's Buchanan Street lies empty as Scotland's coronavirus lockdown takes effect

This amazing photo of an empty Buchanan Street taken from a police helicopter shows how the Scottish Government’s lockdown order is starting to hit home.

Glasgow’s main shopping thoroughfare is normally packed with hundreds of shoppers at lunchtime when the picture was taken earlier today.

Instead, the street was bare as the majority of people stayed indoors after the lockdown announcement from Prime Minister Boris Johnson and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon yesterday.

The picture was taken from the Police Scotland helicopter as it flew over the city on Tuesday.

The force said on Twitter: "Police helicopter captured this image of Buchanan Street, Glasgow just before lunchtime today.

"Remember Government advice and stay at home."

The image will please Nicola Sturgeon who clarified in a Holyrood address earlier today who should stay at home and those key workers who are allowed out.

She ordered construction workers to cease building projects unless they are essential, such as building a hospital.

And she also called on all businesses to consider whether what they do is essential to society and if staff can work safely – if not, they should close.

Police Scotland has increased the presence of its officers in towns and cities across the country in the last 24-hours to deal with the lockdown.

They have the power to arrest people flouting the government’s coronavirus guidance and force them into isolation.

Justice secretary Humza Yousaf confirmed that defying the measures will be a criminal offence, with officers able to detain culprits to protect public health.
