'Glasgow's a great city, why are we so far behind?' - How city centre population will double by 2035

A Glasgow property developer has spoken about how Glasgow can transform its city centre after plans to double its population were approved.

After a 10-week public consultation period Glasgow’s City Centre Living Strategy were given the green light by Glasgow City Council, which would see the number of city centre residents increase from 20,000 to 40,000 by 2035.

Marc Taylor, owner of Tay Letting, has spoken of his hopes for the future of Glasgow's city centre following the decision and what currently holds the area back from being an appealing place to live.

Speaking to Glasgow Live, he said: "It's been in the making for quite some time.

"They have looked at some of the other major cities in the UK. The plan was 'let's put an extra 20,000 in the city centre. Currently the population is sitting at 20,000, so it would double it.

"We asked this question in workshops.  There is not the quality of choice there. There is a great variety of properties in other places like the west end. In the city centre, there is a lack of supply.

"There needs to be a shift in the planning perspective - can we relax current practices to give better property options? That could be on listed buildings or the rule on having two parking spaces per property."

Marc was behind one of the city centre's biggest new developments last year when 36 new luxury apartments were designed for renters in Candleriggs.

He said: "That was a great project to be involved in. It was an old halls of residence and the structure was brilliant. Within a month, all 36 flats had been rented out and had it been 100 units, I think we would have rented  them out within two or three months. That really opened my eyes to the potential of the city centre."

When asked about how he hopes the plans to increase the city centre have progressed in five year, Marc said he hoped that progress has continued to move forward.

He added: "I hope that we are not still talking about it and are putting measures in place to attract residents here and in five years time, we are fast approaching 30,000 residents in the city centre.

"Glasgow's a great city with a great city centre - why are we so far behind? For me, it's all about the housing not being there."
