Glasgow's 34 covid hotspots as fears over omicron grow in the city

Glasgow currently has more than 30 covid hotspot neighbourhoods as the country faces a 'tsunami' of infections linked to a new variant.

Just two weeks before Christmas, 34 neighbourhoods are recording over 400 cases per 100,000 of the population.

Glasgow City as a whole currently has a 7-day positive rate per 100,00 of 319.5 with 2,031 new cases recorded in the first week of December.

Figures are not available for the last five days during which Nicola Sturgeon predicted there will be a 'tsunami of infections' of Omicron cases in Scotland and announced new measures to deal with the rise in cases before Christmas.

Public Health Scotland urged the public to cancel their Christmas parties this year due to fears over the new variant.

12 more deaths and 4,087 new positive cases were reported on Saturday with 552 people currently in hospital with newly confirmed covid.

High levels of infection are being experienced across the city with Drumchapel North and South experiencing the biggest outbreak. A 7-day rate of 775.2 per 100,000 was recorded last week in the North while 668.8 was recorded in the South.

Easterhouse East, Drumry East, and West, Barmalloch, and Carmunnock North are also experiencing a high number of cases and are deemed to be among the worst affected areas in Glasgow City.

Summerston Central and West, Baillieston East, Toryglen and Oatlands and Blairdardie East, Battlefield, Dowanhill and Ibrox have recorded a concerning number of cases.

Elsewhere in the city, a number of areas have managed to suppress the virus with one area recording fewer than three cases. Sighthill is currently the only part of the city with less than three cases in seven days. Glasgow Harbour and Partick South, Milton West, Bridgeton, Govanhill West, Yoker South and Dennistoun North are among the areas with the latest number of cases.
