Glasgow Royal Infirmary coronavirus free parking scheme extended until 2021

Free parking at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary has been extended to next year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The parking charges were suspended in March and the scheme has now been extended by Health Secretary Jeane Freeman.

Staff, visitors, and patients to the hospital will not have to pay charges until January 2021.

Ms Freeman said: “As we continue to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, I am pleased that we are able to extend the free car parking arrangements until January.

"This extension continues to support staff and remove the barriers to our staff working during these unprecedented times."

Sandra White MSP hailed the move as “exactly what we need” but said that the charges “should be scrapped” indefinitely.

Speaking to Glasgow Live, Ms. White said: “I’m very pleased that they have extended the scheme until next year.

“I’m pleased that the cabinet secretary has said she will continue to push to get rid of the PFI on the parking charges. It’s great that they’re doing it and congratulations to everyone who has fought for this to continue, but we still need to remember that after COVID-19 the charges will still be there.

“At a really important time this is one less thing to worry about, but of course, the parking charges are still hanging over us.

“We must keep that in mind and keep pushing to have them eradicated altogether. There are people paying to go to work and it is not right.”
