Glasgow Rocks 'massive blow' as coronavirus could deny them first title in 20 years

Rutherglen basketball player Gareth Murray says it will be a massive blow if Glasgow Rocks are told they can’t win their first title in 20 years due to the coronavirus threat.

Murray and his team-mates expect the news within days, and he’s resigned to the prospect of being told the season is over with five games remaining.

Rocks have a two-point lead over London Lions at the top of the British Basketball League and Murray says taking the title would mean the world.

He said: “Nobody knows what will happen. It will be down to the government but in my opinion it’s likely to be cancelled.

“It’s a great opportunity for us and I would be very disappointed if it gets cancelled. We’re top of the league, playing some good basketball, and it would be a hard one to take if we don’t get the league.

“It would mean everything; the last time they won the league was 20 years ago, so to do that, to be the first Scottish player to do that, and the captain, would be amazing.

“We’ve been working towards this for years, we’re top of the league, so to not be awarded the title would be a big blow.

“I’ve been playing basketball for 23 years, professionally for 15 years and 12 of those have been with Glasgow Rocks.

“The last time we won anything was in 2003 when we won the play-off final, so it would mean so much to win.”
