Glasgow roads: Traffic chaos after major crash forces closure of Clyde Tunnel in one direction

Glasgow drivers have been met with traffic chaos this evening after a crash forced the closure of the Clyde Tunnel in one direction.

The accident happened between the A814 Victoria Park Drive South and A8 Shieldhall Road around 5:30pm.

Congestion is reported back to Anniesland Cross southbound at present, while traffic heading into the city is queued back to the M8 at Junction 25.

Glasgow City Council's traffic information department (TRAFFCOM) confirmed news of the initial closure in a bulletin earlier this evening at 5:35pm.

It read: "Due to an earlier road traffic collision on the A739 Balshagray Avenue, just north of the Clyde Tunnel, the following restrictions are in place:

- The southbound A739 Balshagray Avenue is closed. No southbound access to Clyde Tunnel.

- The northbound A739 Clyde Tunnel is open with vehicles being diverted to Dumbarton Road."

This was then followed by an update at 6:05pm which noted: "The A739 Balshagray Avenue is open to all vehicles, Clyde Tunnel open in both directions."

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.

UPDATE: A Police Scotland spokesperson this morning advised Glasgow Live minor injuries were sustained in the incident, with the tunnel reopening approximately one hour later.
