Glasgow roads closed by cops as Celtic title party starts

ROADS have been closed to traffic as police are redirecting cars away from the Trongate as Celtic fans flock to the area for the unofficial title party.

Celtic fans are expected to gather in the area and the Merchant City to celebrate their club's 55th Scottish Premiership title.

Supporters announced they would be holding an unofficial title bash in the Trongate after Celtic's match with St Mirren at Celtic Park, which finished 1-1.

It is understood that police officers are now standing on the roads surrounding the area and are diverting traffic.

A spokesperson from Glasgow City Council's said: "A large gathering of football fans has congregated at Glasgow Cross, several roads have been closed around this area.

"Road users are advised to avoid this area until further notice and follow Police direction."

Hundreds of revellers are already in the area, with thousands expected to turn out.

First Bus have issued a warning of disruptions to bus travellers, they released an update which states:

"Celtic Title Day, 17th May.

Glasgow City Centre.

Disruption start time: 14:44 - until further notice.

All Services affected."

They had also advised of "anticipated disruption", they said: "Disruption to our City Centre services is anticipated due to a Parade and an expected gathering. Some services will be diverted while others will regrettably be curtailed.

"Updates will be provided when service alterations take place, as timings are subject to change."

The streets are filling up with green and white bursts of colour and smoke flares and flags are filling the sky.

A café had told customers it would close early because it would be 'too busy outside' with the party.

And a busy store in the area has warned it might need to close 'earlier than normal' today due to 'potential disruption'.
