Glasgow restaurant forced to closed after heavy rain causes kitchen to flood during evening service

One of Glasgow's most popular restaurants was forced to close due to extreme flooding.

Kitchen staff at The Gannet on Argyle Street had to abandon their work after heavy rain hit the city on Saturday.

The restaurant, which was fully booked, announced the closure on social media with a video showing ankle-level water covering the kitchen at 6.30pm.

Bookings made for Sunday lunch have also had to be cancelled while the team cleans up the mess left behind.

Bosses blamed 'the state of Glasgow's drains' as well as the torrential downpour for the flooding.

The explained: "Apologies to all the guests that have bookings with us this evening, we have had to close because of extreme flooding caused by a torrential downpour and the state of Glasgow’s drains.

"Obviously closing when we have a fully booked restaurant is heartbreaking but we have no other option.

"We won’t be able to honour bookings for tomorrow lunch as the clean-up needed is going to take some time.

"We hope to be back up and running for evening service tomorrow."

We reported how Glasgow was hit by 30mm rainfall in one hour causing serious flooding across the city.

A yellow warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms is in place until this evening.
