East Lothian police catch Glasgow residents at popular beach in lockdown bust

Glasgow residents who broke lockdown restrictions to travel from the city to a popular East Lothian beach were caught by police.

The rule-flouters were stopped by officers in North Berwick last month with the occupants of the vehicle found to be from Glasgow.

Under current national lockdown guidance, travel to another local authority for non-essential reasons is prohibited by law.

The 'covidiots' were issued with a Covid-19 breach ticket and told to return home, according to report a shared with North Berwick Community Council.

The community council told Edinburgh Live that the monthly police report revealed that: "In the early hours of Friday 5th February, police stopped a vehicle in North Berwick where the occupants resided in the Glasgow area.

"They were issued with Covid Breach FPT and told to return home."

An East Lothian Council spokesperson told East Lothian Courier last month amid rising numbers of Covid fines in the area: “While lockdown is starting to slow down the virus, the situation remains serious and highly fragile.

“Current restrictions, including the important ‘stay-at-home’ requirement, remain in place. People should only leave their own local authority area for a limited number of essential reasons, as set out by the Scottish Government.

“We are supportive of Police Scotland’s efforts to engage with the public and encourage compliance, recognising that enforcement is used as a last resort where there is a clear breach of legislation."
