Glasgow residents can get salt to grit paths and pavements from council - here's how

It's safe to say winter has arrived in Glasgow. Over the past 24 hours we've witnessed snow and seen temperatures plummet below freezing. Car windows are covered in frost and the walk between the front door and your vehicle is a little more treacherous than it was just a matter of days ago.

And the icy weather isn't expected to let up any time soon, according to forecasters, with overnight temperatures across the weekend set to plummet to 0C once more.

The freezing conditions can of course cause real hazards on the roads and for pedestrians, particularly the elderly and vulnerable.

Glasgow City Council are not always able to grit all roads and pathways, while private walkways and driveways will usually be under the responsibility of the owner to maintain.

However, perhaps unbeknown to many Glaswegians, the council supply salt to those who need it when the cold snap bites.

Available from a number of public parks and recycling depots, the salt can be picked up - if you bring your own bag - between 10am on Monday and 4pm on Sunday.

Here's what Glasgow City Council say:

Small quantities of rock salt (maximum 10kgs) are available to the public at the following Glasgow City Council depots and local parks.

Please bring your own bag for salt collection.
