Glasgow remains in Level 3 lockdown for another week, Nicola Sturgeon confirms

Glasgow will remain in Level 3 lockdown restrictions for another week while the majority of Scotland moves to Level 2 on Monday (May 17).

Nicola Sturgeon shared the ‘difficult decision’ at the Scottish Parliament this afternoon while answering emergency questions on spikes in covid cases in Moray and in Glasgow.

The situation will be reviewed again at the end of next week, but in the meantime residents will be asked not to travel in and out of Glasgow.

Moray was scheduled to stay in Level 3 for another week, however Glasgow surpassed the number of cases there according to today’s figures, making the city Scotland’s ‘covid hotspot’ by a significant margin.

The latest figures published on Friday showed there were 80.4 cases per 100,000 people in Glasgow in the seven days leading up to May 11, pushing it ahead of Moray where there were 68.9.

The First Minister added this afternoon that test positivity in Glasgow is now at 3.5%.

The cluster has been seen in Glasgow's south side in particular, where the FM says there is evidence of the Indian variant of coronavirus, thought to be more transmissible than the Kent variant previously causing concern.

She said that support of up to £750 a week will be provided to hospitality businesses that were preparing to reopen indoors as of Monday.
