Glasgow recycling centres to reopen next week

Recycling centres will soon reopen in Glasgow with the coronavirus lockdown restrictions set to be eased across the country.

Nicola Sturgeon announced this afternoon (Thursday) lockdown easing measures will be implemented at the end of next week.

The Scottish Government has published a route map on how the country will move out of lockdown and into a phased lifting of restrictions - what Sturgeon calls “our journey to a new normal”.

Speaking at Holyrood, Sturgeon confirmed lockdown would ease on Thursday, May 28, if the R number (the rate of infection) continues to stay below 1 in Scotland.

And, all being well, that should mean the reopening of recycling centres too, as stated within the government's 'through and out of the crisis' document.

Should the Scottish Government be able to implement phase one as of next Thursday, effectively, recycling centres should also be able to open on this date too; May 28.

UPDATE: Zero Waste Scotland have confirmed to Glasgow Live a number of recycling centres in Glasgow will not re-open until June 1.

Last week, we reported The Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) said that all recycling centres will have to ensure that they're able to maintain physical distancing for staff and the public before being able to reopen.

The ability of each facility to adhere to the distancing measures will be a deciding factor on whether and to what extent they can be reopened by the specified date.

Concerns have been raised about the increase of fly tipping across the city.

The public have called for the council to reopen the centres while the lockdown is in place, however, the local authority said travelling to a recycling centre would not count as an 'essential journey'.
