Glasgow recycling centre evacuated after 'cleaner found grenade while sorting rubbish'

A Glasgow recycling centre was evacuated after a 'cleaner found a hand grenade in a picking cabin', one terrified employee claims.

Staff were cleared from Glasgow Recycling and Renewable Energy Centre on Polmadie Road on Thursday after a suspected grenade was found on site.

Police scrambled to the scene on Polmadie Road just after 11am, with bomb squad personnel called thereafter.

One member of staff told Glasgow Live that a cleaner, who is relatively new to the job, found the alleged explosive which working in a picking cabin.

The shaken employee, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: "We were sitting at our desks when a fire alarm went off just after 11am. It wasn't at the usual time of a fire drill so we were all a little concerned but quickly got out the building.

At our muster stations one of the cleaners, a man who's not long worked here, came over looking shocked. He said he found a hand grenade while working in the picking cabin; where rubbish is separated by hand."

The worker added: "He picked up what he described to be green and bobbly with the same texture as a hand grenade. The pin was apparently still stuck inside.

"He was absolutely sure it was a grenade and told a member of security straight away. Soon after the police arrived and were led away by staff.

"A police officer came back and told us that they were calling the explosive disposal teams and that we were to move further back.

"That was scary as we knew something was up."

The employee then told of the fraught moments that followed as staff were asked to re-enter the building, collect their belongings and leave the premises 'a few cars at a time'.

"Going back in was worrying, anything could have happened. Non-essential staff were told to leave, around 50 of us. The cars were led out a few at a time, I just got straight home. Around 20 staff were still standing out on the road when I left.

"Hopefully we hear what happened soon and thankfully the cleaner wasn't injured in any way."

Police confirmed they were called to a report of a suspected grenade at around lunchtime today and said that there is no wider risk to the public.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Officers were called around 11.10am on Thursday 2 June 2022, to a report of a suspected grenade at the waste disposal complex on Polmadie Road, Glasgow.

“Officers are in attendance and Explosive Ordnance Disposal team has been contacted. Staff have been evacuated and there is no risk to the wider public.”

Glasgow Recycling and Renewable Energy Centre is operated by Viridor, who have been approached for comment. Glasgow City Council have also been contacted for comment.
