Glasgow records over 3,000 new coronavirus cases in past week amid fresh lockdown

Glasgow has recorded over 3,000 coronavirus cases in the past week following news that a further 412 people tested positive for the virus in the past 24 hours.

Since Monday, when 607 people in the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde area had tested positive, a further 2,632 people have contracted the infection, taking the total for the week to 3,239.

To date, Scottish Government records confirm that a total of 51,183 people have tested positive for the virus in the wider Glasgow area.

Meanwhile there have been 1,740 coronavirus cases in the NHS Lanarkshire area this past week, with the total number of cases to date close to surpassing the 30,000 mark.

The latest figures, published this afternoon, confirm there are currently 496 people in hospitals across Glasgow with confirmed cases of Covid-19, 40 of whom are in intensive care.

Glasgow, alongside every other local authority area in mainland Scotland, was placed under Level 4 lockdown restrictions on Boxing Day due to the new mutant strain of the virus sweeping the UK.

Last week, Nicola Sturgeon warned it was "very unlikely" current restrictions will be lifted when they are reviewed at the end of the month.
