Glasgow reacts to shop selling one nappy at a time amid cost of living crisis

Glasgow Live readers have expressed their shock at the revelation that a shop is selling one nappy at a time as parents can't afford to buy full size packets from supermarkets.

The community ‘cabin’ shop in Cranhill has made various allowances amidst the cost of living crisis. The retailer also offers small quantities of foods such as loose flour or pasta as well as the chance to buy single batteries and one toilet roll.

The shop is operated by charitable organisation the Cranhill Development Trust as part of a community hub.

Poverty Alliance director Peter Kelly said the shop was "a great example of how people can create their own solutions to tackle the effect of poverty in their communities".

Glasgow Live readers have expressed their shock at the situation, and dismay at the rising poverty levels they reflect.

One person said this was close to their own reality, writing: "Poverty is hitting people hard now and the fact that it’s working families that are struggling is a joke. I am adding everything up while going round doing the food shop panicking about how much we are spending."

Others expressed concern at the idea of only one nappy for a baby and argued they should be freely available.

One reader said: "Nappies should be free for people struggling with babies so sad the world has come to this."

Another added: "Females get free sanitary products. Babies should get free nappies. Can't bear the thought of struggling parents changing them less often and later than they need to be."

A third person said: "This country is a disgrace , how can one nappy help a baby? They go through so many, it’s a pity the terry nappies are not available, they last throughout the babies need for them, plus they are good for the environment."

Meanwhile, many pointed to the rising use of food banks as another example of the struggles people are currently facing.

One person said: "Sad day that this is reality....between this and the use of community food banks what's our country coming too?"

Another added: "Grim it's come to this...the Governments must do far more to help the hardest hit at the moment...It's simply impossible that they can cope with these energy bills and the cost of living rising at the same time. At least reinstate the top up on benefits until this calms down a bit. They actually need it more now than they did last year!"
