Glasgow rallies to donate dream mother-of-the-groom dresses to struggling mum

Glaswegian women have rallied together to help a mother-of-the-groom find her dream dress for her son's wedding after falling on hard times.

Over 100 kindhearted ladies replied to a Facebook post and offered to donate outfits free of charge to help the mum feel gorgeous on the big day.

Best friend Maria Hewitt, a covid ward nurse from Paisley, took to social media to help her pal hunt down her dream dress.

She wrote: "Speaking to a friend last night who literally is just getting by financially. Her son is getting married in a few weeks and she doesn't have a outfit. She has been scouring the internet charity shops but not found anything. She's a size 14. Can anyone please help."

The post has received over 100 likes and 142 replies, with women from all across Glasgow pledging to donate their finest outfits to help put a smile on the 51-year-old's face.

Maria's friend, who wishes to remain anonymous, is 'over the moon' by the kind offers she received.

Speaking to Glasgow Live , Maria said: "Everyone has been so generous. Someone has even offered to do her hair and makeup and she is over the moon.

"It is easing her anxiety and I am going to pick up the stuff for her to try."

Maria, who faced her own struggles last year after losing her husband to covid, said she was overwhelmed by the response.

She said: "I am absolutely astonished and full of gratitude for all your offers and suggestions."

Dozens of women across the city have pledged to give everything from fascinators and makeup to shoes and dresses to help the Paisley mother-of-the-groom feel a million bucks.

But the post went far beyond finding an outfit - it proved that people really do make Glasgow.

Angela Trainer responded: "You girls make me cry, you are so kind."

Another replied: "Women helping other women ... not tearing them down or running them down."

And Mandy Skinner summed it up best when she wrote: "Glasgow people can’t beat them."
