Glasgow rakes in £15million in city centre parking charges

Glasgow City Centre parking charges have generated almost £15million for the council in just three years.

New figures issued by the council shows the funds issued from drivers parking on the inner city zones generated the huge amount, which was high even before the Sunday parking charges were established in 2019.

Data shows the council collected £5,931,583 from parking charges in the inner city zone from 2018 to 2019.

This figure increased to £6,391,727 the following year when Sunday parking charges were introduced.

Despite this, in April 2020 to April 2021 the amount collected by the council for charges dropped to £2,285,785.

According to the council the operating costs for parking in the inner city zones are around £2million, leaving a nice profit of £13million.

A Glasgow City Council spokesman confirmed to Glasgow Live in the year to March 2019, the department of Neighbourhoods, Regeneration and Sustainability spent roughly £160m, which was made up of £110m from general funds and £50m generated through earned income, fees and charges.
